Michael always found it hard to keep a job, but not in the sense that most people change jobs. It was because he wanted to try everything and live the experiences that this life of opportunities availed to him. From owning his own bike shop to trading commodities, from night club owner to working on a squid trawler, Michael traveled the country educating himself through personal experience and becoming a 21st century Renaissance man.
Michael’s love for creating was expressed in a decade of stained glass craft along with designing and building a state-of-the-art and off-the-grid log house in the Colorado mountains. It is here that he was introduced to lapidary and gemstones by working with award-winning lapidarist Michael Christie and Susan Allen. However, the road again beckoned Michael to travel, where he found himself faceting stones in under the tutelage of Hubert Rackets. Michael now calls the Finger Lakes region of New York home and practices his lapidary skill at the Hashnu Stone & Gem Studio.
Michael works with every gemstone material that he can acquire and enjoys taking new materials and trying new treatments and techniques. He loves to facet opal and other non-traditional material. He understands the potential of the rough gemstones and uses his years of lapidary education to maximize the brightness, color and other gemstone attributes of every gemstone design that he creates.
